If you’re a stay at home Dad and you’ve been researching dollhouses for girls, you might want to check out this video demo of an extremely simple but creative way anyone (even me) can build a cute dollhouse for their kids. Featured in this Martha Stewart segment is a stay at home Dad who has made it his hobby to build, through arts and crafts all sorts of cool little toys and playthings for his kids and their friends while he stays home and cares for them all day.
What’s so different about his design for this little house is it’s incredible simplicity and ease to build. OK… maybe it’s not as elaborate as my eighty year old friend in Hawaii’s work (see previous post) but because of it’s clean and open design it allows the kids to sort of fill in the blanks with their own ingenuity and creativity. By giving his children this blank canvass of a house it becomes their responsibility to decorate, furnish and pretend more with their imagination, while still having fun.
I’ve always been a firm believer that we work with what have… and let’s face it, four foot tall dollhouses are not cheap! But I also believe very strongly that when it comes to little girls, a dollhouse can create so much joy, happiness and social skills from playing with their friends that even a simple design is better than no dollhouse at all. Earnie Soares is not you average octogenarian. Mr. Soares builds by hand dollhouses for girls and donates them to families with children who ordinarily could never afford one. In fact, his custom built dollhouses are so detailed it’s hard to imagine the joy it must bring to the lucky little girls that are able to receive one of these beautiful miniature houses.
From the hand painted dollhouses exterior, to the wonderfully crafted furniture and custom accessories, Mr. Soares obviously puts his heart and soul into these projects. And he does it all for free in the hope of simply brightening the life of a child in need. I learned of this nice man and his work while watching the local Hawaiian news one evening, ironically… Earnie Soares is from Hawaii just like me!
It seems that this gentle retiree donates his days to building these ornate dollhouses from raw materials until they become multi-level miniature homes standing four feet tall and filled with every detail you could imagine. You can see from the interview that he spares nothing… even when it comes to interior wall paper, trim and other fixtures. It’s so nice to see something like this, and I thought this interview and video tour was worth sharing here on Dollhouses For Girls… I hope you enjoy it!
